Once upon a time…

There lived an ordinary teenage girl. She had to move to another place to live far away from her original area. Once there, she met a little girl who lived down the street from her new house. They talked and found out they had a lot in common and became instant buddies. The little girl introduced the older girl to her two older brothers. The older girl found out that she and the oldest brother will be going to the same high school.

School starts. The teenage girl isn’t used to the new surroundings and misses her old school very much. No one talks to her as she walks into her first class, but she could feel eyes staring at her. As the teacher takes the role call, she wonders where and who she’d eat her lunch with. Two more classes ‘til lunch.

Second period. Same as first. The whispers made her want to cry. Why is everyone so mean? She thought. I don’t want to be here… Just as she was about to break down and cry, she heard someone talk to her for the very first time that day. “Hey…you’re the girl that came over that day right?”

She looked up and saw the face of the oldest brother of her first friend. “Yes…hi”, she said, choking back her tears. “Oh, well, do you want to eat lunch with me? I can introduce you to my other friends!” he said energetically. “Oh yes, please!! And thanks a lot!” she smiled. “Ok then, I’ll wait for you at the cafeteria door when the bell rings!” he smiled back.

Lunch time came. She smiled for the first time that day. The boy’s friends were really friendly to her and found out that at least one of them were in her every class. There were girls in the lunch group too, and they all invited her to eat lunch with them everyday from then on.

As time wore on, the girl was used to her surroundings now. She’d made a lot of friends and got closer to the ones she made first. The girl and the boy that introduced her to his friends, became best friends. They told each other everything and never hid anything from each other. They spent all the happy times and sad times together. But one day…

At third period, the girl and the boy were working on a project together. The boy reached over for a pair of scissors and accidentally brushed the girl’s hand. “Oh sorry…” the boy said, turning pink for some reason. “It’s fine!” the girl said, surprised. That’s when she noticed how handsome and cute he looked. That’s when she got that feeling of butterflies in her stomach. That’s when she realized, that finally after all this time,

she liked him as more than just a best friend…

1 month passed, and the girl finally decided that she didn’t like him.

No, she loved him.

She wanted to tell him soooo badly… but was afraid that their friendship would end immediately after. 1 week later, she told him.

She was struggling not to cry in class one day, and he asked her what was wrong. She couldn’t take it anymore. She wanted to scream, to cry so hard that she would die. “I think I like you,” she said, and ran to the bathroom. She didn’t come out until the bell rang to end the day.

3 months later…nothing happened. Everything went on as if nothing happened. The girl was so confused… she cried herself to sleep every night. She told her friend that she liked him, and the friend said that she’d ask if he liked her too. He was surprised that she asked and said, “I don’t know… and I feel bad for not knowing…” 5 minutes later, he said, “I think I like her… ok, I like her.” The friend told the girl what he said, but she didn’t believe him. She forced it out of him and found out it was too good to be true. They became a couple that day.

Months passed by, and their bond was still strong and holding. She was happier than she had ever been. They spent all their time together.

One night, as they were staring at the star painted sky, he said to her, “Can you count the stars?” “No, it’s impossible…” she said. “Exactly. Every star you can see tonight represents a day I want to spend with you.” They never told each other those three words. The three words didn’t need to be said. They were just understood. But the girl wanted to tell him… to say that she loves him.

Then, one day, a day that she would never forget for the rest of her life…

The boy phoned her and said he’d be going out with his parents and couldn’t talk long. As they were at the end of their phone call, the boy asked her, “Baby, is there anything you need to say before I go?” The girl paused… her heart thumping loudly. “I… I… lo…” She couldn’t say it. “Um…nothing honey, have fun tonight. I’ll see you tomorrow…” “Oh, ok,” the boy sounded disappointed. “Well, I’ll go then baby, sweet dreams alright? I love you,” and he hung up.

The girl gasped and stood there for a long time still holding the phone to her ear. Oh, I’m so stupid! She thought. It’s just three words. And he said it and I didn’t get a chance to say it back… Oh well, I guess I’ll tell him tomorrow…

The next day, she heard he had died in a car accident that same night.
